It was one hail mary too many that made this long time Lions fan say enough was enough as Debbie Van Vels-Moored, age 52, of Grand Rapids, passed away on December 7, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. Debbie was a loving mother, daughter, sibling and friend who has a place in many hearts and was known to be a selfless woman with a laugh and roar no one could forget. Debbie worked for many years in the food service industry, heckling customers about their favorite sports teams defeats while creating many memories and friendships along the way. She was preceded in death by her son, Joshua Deacon and father, Donald Van Vels. She will be lovingly remembered by her parents, Buck and Betty Grutter; son and daughter, Joey and Tara Deacon; grand dog, Bronco Deacon; brothers and sisters, Michelle Van Vels and Lee Purches, Brad and Allyson Grutter, and Ryan and Cortney Van Vels; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom were as close to her as family. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8pm and again Friday from 11am-12pm with a celebration of her life service following at 12:00pm at Ofield Funeral Home 4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood. While being a die-hard Lions fan was never easy for most of us to understand, Debbie's passion for the Lions and others will never be forgotten and we want to continue her giving ways while keeping hope alive, so creating a partnership with the Detroit Lions and the Helen Devos Children's Hospital to provide Detroit Lions jerseys and books to children battling cancer only seemed like the right thing that Debbie would do. In lieu of flowers an account has been set up in Debbie's honor at Fifth Third Bank.
