Obituary

David Dixon Horner, known affectionately as Dave to his friends and loved ones, passed away on February 3, 2024, at the age of 73 from a heart attack in the very town that he loved and called home.

Born on October 2, 1950, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a proud graduate of Sparta High School's Class of 1969, Dave's sense of duty and adventure led him to serve his country in the army. Throughout his 23 years of service, he rose to the rank of First Sergeant, a testament to his leadership and dedication, retiring in 1995. He earned a BA degree from the University of Maryland's European campus while serving overseas.

After his military career, Dave continued to pave his way, embracing the open roads as an over-the-road trucker. His passion for driving and teaching others how to do it safely led him to a fulfilling role as a driver trainer for Fed-Ex in Las Vegas and along the west coast. His work ethic made him a respected figure within his profession.

Dave had a particular talent for bowling and his skill led him to victory in both the European Masters Championship and the Asian Masters Championship during his time in the army. Dave also found joy in country dancing, which allowed him to express his fun-loving personality. His enthusiasm for NASCAR, baseball, and Michigan football were often sparking lively discussions with friends and family.

Those who knew Dave would describe him as intelligent, friendly, and loving. His ability to engage with people on a genuine level was one of his most endearing qualities. He was a man who valued knowledge, companionship, and heartfelt relationships, traits that made him an unforgettable presence in the lives of those he met.

Dave's memory will be cherished and kept alive by his beloved wife Sheila, who stood by his side in love and partnership. He was a devoted father to his sons, Scott and Ben, imparting his values and wisdom. Dave's brothers, Steve, Eric, and Dick, in-laws Dan, Jennifer, Rhonda, and Pam, nephew Steven, and niece Jessica will remember him for his loyalty, humor, and the unwavering support he provided them.

While our hearts are heavy with the loss of such a wonderful man, we take solace in the rich tapestry of memories he leaves behind. Dave's life was one of service, love, and joy. He touched many lives and his legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. We celebrate the life of David Dixon Horner, a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and laughed heartily.

Dave's journey through life was one of purpose and joy, and although his passing marks the end of an era, the imprint he left on friends and family is indelible. As we say farewell to a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, we hold on to the lessons he taught us through his example: to live with passion, to serve with honor, and to cherish every moment.

The family will carry forward the memory of David Dixon Horner, a man whose life was as rich and full as the bonds he formed. Dave's story is not one of an end, but a continuing

narrative of the love and laughter he shared, echoing in the lives of those he influenced. He will be profoundly missed, and forever remembered.
