Obituary

Daniel Patrick Morris passed away on January 6, 2025 at the age of 65 of a Glioblastoma brain tumor. Despite the challenges of his illness, Dan remained in good spirits until the end, and was a favorite at the hospital and hospice for his humor and irreverent nature.

Dan was born in Ann Arbor Michigan, then began a global adventure with his family by moving to Indianapolis Indiana, Toronto Canada, London England, Florence Italy, eventually spending his high school years in Rome Italy, a city and country that settled into his soul. After Rome, Dan's family moved to Copenhagen Denmark, Seoul Korea, Hong Kong, and Beijing China, places he frequented on holidays. Along the way Dan explored dozens of other countries including Egypt, France, Germany, Monaco, Austria, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Tunisia, Ireland, Spain, and many, many more. He was an avid expat and unbridled traveler, his motto being "All who wander are not lost."

For university, seeking to discover some of his family roots, Dan returned to Michigan to attend Kalamazoo College. Following a misadventure where he inadvertently set fire to a dorm, Dan transferred to Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he successfully graduated without burning it to the ground.

After university, Dan was a store rep for Walgreens HQ in Chicago, worked for a year in Rome, Italy, then opened two restaurants on St. Thomas US Virgin Islands, one of which was called "The Earl of Sandwich." Following that, he managed Exxon's operations on the island, successfully keeping the business running when Hurricane Marilyn laid waste to St. Thomas in 1995. After returning stateside, he became a neon artist in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and then he helped "Keep Austin Weird" (the city's motto) by being part of a team designing modernist, award-winning homes (two of which are featured in this article . After Texas, Dan retired and moved to Khon Kaen, Thailand, then Vilnius, Lithuania (to get in touch with his Lithuanian roots), before returning to Grand Rapids (to reconnect with his extended family). Everywhere he went he was a thriving artist in a variety of media, and a consummate explorer of curiosities.

Dan studied Arabic in Cairo, ran with the bulls in Pamplona, witnessed the sun setting over the Great Wall of China, gave guided tours of the DMZ in Korea, volunteered at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, salvaged Soviet art from abandoned factories in Lithuania, and so much more. His final trip before his illness arrived was to Cuba where he reveled in his love for quality dark rum, and discovered a passion for hand-rolled cigars. Put simply, Dan lived a very unique life.

He was married 5 times, saying it was because he was a die-hard romantic. He did not have any children.

Dan was pre-deceased by his parents Donald & Denise (Barrett) Morris, his beloved Aunt Junie (Morris) Lareau, and is survived by his brother Douglas Morris, cousins Mary (Lareau) & Don Smith, Dave & Christa (Happel) Barrett, Eric Olsen, Christopher Olsen, Sue (Barrett) & Greg Duffy, Stephen (aka Cazzo) & Barbara (Krot) Barrett, Michael & Sue (McAdams) Lareau, Jim Lareau, Lucy (Bellows) Lareau, Nancy (Lareau) Meuret, Christine (Morris) Khalil, Dirck Morris, Greg & Elaine (Koperski) Morris, Ann (Morris) Ayers, and Alison (Morris) Pierce.

Please watch the movie "Hilma" , in which Dan had a featured role as a professor, and remember his quirky, whimsical, adventurous nature fondly.
