Obituary

Daniel Lee McLaughlin, 64, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, died December 23 after a lengthy fight against a series of ailments. He was born to the late Jack and Marilou McLaughlin on May 3, 1951 in Grand Rapids. Daniel graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1969. He wed Teresa (Ohren) Noonan and was married for 30 years. He graduated from Aquinas College in 1974 and was in the first class from Aquinas to study abroad in Ireland, an experience which he treasured immensely. He received his Master's degree in Public Administration from Seattle University in 1984. Daniel had a variety of jobs after graduating from Aquinas but perhaps was most proud of being a community organizer, focused on improving living conditions in urban areas. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Eastown Association in Grand Rapids and did similar work in Salt Lake City, Utah and Seattle, Washington. He also enjoyed the many years he spent working in the field of energy conservation. Daniel is survived by his brother Patrick of Ann Arbor, along with wife, Molly and children Kevin and Lauren, and two daughters: Amanda Saul of Portland, Oregon and Meghan DiMuzio, and son-in-law Steve DiMuzio, of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Aidan and Fiona Saul, and many friends. Daniel was a remarkable and affable individual who enjoyed meeting new people and was generous and welcoming to all he met. He made friends wherever he went and exemplified the character of someone who had kissed the Blarney Stone; he was outgoing and loved to share his infectious exuberance for life with friends, family and strangers. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. .A memorial service for Dan will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1935 Plymouth Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI, at 10 a.m., April 1. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Eastown Community Association or the charity of your choice.
