Obituary

Cynthia Lee Goudzwaard, 63, of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed into a new life expression on Sunday, April 28, 2019. She was born in Grand Rapids to Louis and Dorothy Goudzwaard on September 15, 1955. Cindy graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1973 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Music, Piano Technology and Bassoon Performance at Michigan State University. She also received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Grand Valley State University. After college she worked at Keith Hill & Associates and Tyre & Goudzwaard, Inc. building fortepianos, harpsichords, clavichords and tracker organs. While working later in the food service industry, Cindy developed a keen interest in vegetarian cooking and organic gardening. Her passion, however, was playing the bassoon. She taught private bassoon lessons and was a principal member of the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra (formerly the West Shore Symphony Orchestra) for over 20 years. She also performed in small ensembles where she developed many precious lifelong relationships with fellow musicians. Cindy loved cats and had a special way with even feral ones. Many who knew her would see her as a bright, independent spirit, kind and gentle to all, but fragile. Cindy is survived by two beloved sisters, Pamela and Patricia, and cousins Gregory Succop of Brooklyn, New York, Martin Banning of Grand Rapids and Harmon Banning of Newark, Delaware. She was preceded in death by her father last fall, and only one brief day by her mother. Those wishing to offer expressions of sympathy are encouraged to make contributions to Carol's Ferals, PO Box 150186, Grand Rapids, MI 49515-0186. The family would like to thank the members of Spectrum Health Hospice for their care and compassion during Cindy's final hours. Friends and family will gather at a future date to celebrate her life.
