Obituary

Curtis Jay Saarinen, 57, of Wyoming, MI passed away on June 18, 2020 surrounded by his wife & three daughters following a short illness.

Curt was born on July 17, 1962 in Highland Park, MI to Jerome "Jay" and the late Gertrude (Hynninen) Saarinen. He graduated from Newberry High School in 1980. After high school he attended Mid Michigan Community College where he received certifications in heating & cooling. He later went on to receive his Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Michigan Technological University.
On June 25, 1988 he was united in marriage to Laura Wallace of Harrison, MI and they moved to Utica, MI for a short time before becoming residents of Tamarack City & Dollar Bay in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for 18 years. Curt worked at Lakeshore, and Northern Hardwoods. In 2008, the family moved to Grand Rapids, where Curt started working for Material Testing Consultants as a Field Technician. This June was his 12 year anniversary with the company he very much enjoyed working for.

Curt enjoyed fishing - especially with his grandsons, golfing, hunting, camping, and playing guitar; jam sessions with dear friend Gary Jorgenson were always a joy to listen to.
He is survived by his loving wife, Laura; 3 children Heather, Bridget, and Katie; 2 grandsons Dawson and Owen; Father Jay Saarinen; 1 sister Debby (Dave) Tapani; 1 nephew Devin Tapani; 4 brother-in-laws; Barry (Julie) Wallace, Matthew Wallace, Stuart Wallace, and Dale (Amanda) Corlew; 3 sister-in-laws; Christina Wallace, Melissa Regan, and Michelle (Rob) Fair; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Saarinen.

A celebration of Curt's life will be held on July 18, 2020 from 3pm-6pm at Palmer Park 1275 52nd St Wyoming, MI 49509. An additional celebration of Curt's life will be held next summer in the Upper Peninsula for friends & family. Family will provide details of that celebration at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be sent to 'DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans.' In Marquette, MI or the American Lung Association.
