Curtis Stephen Hellem – "Curt" to loved ones and friends – age 74, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, peacefully passed away on January 31, 2023. He was born July 27, 1948 to Ralph and Hazel (Peacock) Hellem of Wyoming, Michigan. Curt had two brothers: Robert Hellem, who preceded him in death, and James Hellem, of Grand Rapids. Curt was a longtime employee of Grand Rapids Public Schools. His over 30-year career spanned from 1968 until his 2002 retirement.

He married the love of his life, Sue Anne (Slagter) Hellem, on June 30, 1972. Together he and Sue had three children: Julie Hellem of Grand Haven, Tammy Hellem of Grand Rapids, and Ryan (Andrea) Hellem of Allendale. Five grandchildren also survive him – Marissa Hellem, Alicia Hellem, Nicholas Hellem, Lill Hellem, and Gianna Hellem – as well as four great-grandchildren – Lucas Hellem, Kinzley Cole, Daxton Hellem, and Liam DenHerder.

His parents Ralph and Hazel and his granddaughter Lilly also preceded Curt in death.

Curt will be remembered for his love of his family, camping anywhere Up North and fishing. There were many summers spent with family at the cottage on Diamond Lake, fishing, watching kids play and looking out at the water.
