Cris Lee (Butts) DeWolf, known affectionately as Cris, passed away peacefully on September 18th, 2025, in Mecosta, MI. Born on July 31, 1959, in Grand Rapids, MI, Cris was a beacon of knowledge and an inspiration to all who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of education, curiosity, and the enduring love of family.
Cris was a devoted father to his four children, Caitlin, Trevor, Mikaela, and Noah, and a doting grandfather ( PaPa) to his grandchild, Suki. Paramount was his relationshjp with his life partner, best friend, wife - Lisa DeWolf. His commitment to family was of the utmost importance, and he instilled in his children the same values of love and learning that he held dear. Cris was the cherished younger brother of Cindy and the respected elder to his younger siblings, Mike and Steven. His role as a mentor and guiding light to his family was a source of great pride and joy.
An esteemed alumnus of Central Michigan University, Cris earned his master's degree and went on to lead a distinguished career in science and education. His work with prestigious institutions such as Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and NASA, including contributions to THEMIS, SOFIA, and MAVEN missions, showcased his brilliant mind and unwavering dedication to advancing human knowledge. Cris's influence extended into the classroom, where he was honored as the Earth Science Teacher of the Year in 2010, and the HeART of MESTA award in 2021 both of which reflecting his passion a passion for igniting scientific curiosity in his students as well as his overall commitment to the profession.
Cris's leadership and expertise were recognized through his presidency and editorial work with the Michigan Earth Science Teachers Association (MESTA). His ability to communicate complex concepts with ease and enthusiasm made him a beloved figure in the scientific community. Furthering his commitment to education, Cris served as director and educator at Camp Watonka, where he shared the wonders of hands-on sciences and archery with eager young minds.
A man of deep Christian faith, Cris lived his life in accordance with the principles of love, compassion, and service. This faith was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him through life's challenges and triumphs.
Cris's interests were as vast as the universe he so loved to explore. A constant thirst for knowledge drove him to read extensively, take rejuvenating walks in nature, and collect rocks from his travels. He found solace in star gazing, marveling at the celestial wonders that had fascinated him since childhood. His love for teaching was not confined to the classroom; he was always eager to share his insights and discoveries with anyone who shared his curiosity.
Described by those who knew him as loving, intelligent, and passionate, Cris's legacy is one of boundless affection, intellectual pursuit, and an unwavering passion for life. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, his students, and his colleagues, who were all touched by his generosity of spirit and his insatiable quest for understanding the world around him.
Cris Lee DeWolf's journey through life was a remarkable one, marked by achievements both personal and professional. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on the world and the countless lives he has enriched. Though he may be gone, the light of his wisdom and the warmth of his love will continue to guide us, like the stars he so loved to observe.
A dessert celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 28 from 3:00pm-6:00pm at the Canadian Lakes Alpine Haus, 11610 Belle Isle Canadian Lakes, MI 49346.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Corewell Health Hospice , The ARC (Animal Rescue Coalition), or the Renucci House in Grand Rapids.
