Corinne Poortenga, 88, went home to our Lord, where she had longed to be, on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021. No more pain, no more sorrow.

Born at home, Nov. 24, 1932, (delivered by her father but not registered until Nov. 25 by the doctor, causing some confusion when she went to obtain her Social Security Card) in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. She was the second child of Bill and Effie (nee Huisenga) DeHorn with 5 siblings (John, Gerald, Roger, Judith, and Bill) whom she dearly loved. Corinne worked in downtown Chicago as a teenager and she continued to love "going downtown." and told fond stories of working at Walgreens and at a fabric store where she learned to sew, of traveling by streetcar, and of her dad taking the older kids to learn to swim in Lake Michigan.

Corinne married John Poortenga of Lansing, Illinois where they raised five children. She is remembered for her love of children, hospitality, singing, baking, swimming, new experiences, friends, and of various immigrants to the United States, from places as far away as Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Morocco. She and John became surrogate parents and grandparents to many.

She is survived by her loving children, Cheryl (and Ken) Flory, Cynthia (and the late Jim)
Poortenga, John (and Deb) Poortenga, Scott (and Linda) Poortenga, Kristen (and the late Art) Vos, 14 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
