Obituary

On January 18, 2025, Connie L. Stephenson passed away at Resthaven Care Center Rachel House in Holland, Michigan. She was 81 years of age.


Born on October 17, 1943, in Lansing, Michigan to D. Pauline (Duncan) and Robert P. Stephenson, Connie was the first of four siblings, followed by Barbara Jo, Mary Lynn, and David Duncan.


Family moved to Grand Rapids, Connie attended Townline Elementary School and graduated from Godwin High School Class of 1961 with Distinction in the field of Social Studies. A graduate of Michigan State University in 1965 B.S. Social Science and Secondary Education and 1972 University of Michigan with Master Social Work Group Work and Social Treatment. Certifications held Master's Social Worker Clinical and Macro License; and Marriage and Family Therapist License for State of Michigan. Spanning a 40-year career in social services, private practice in trauma and additions recovery, Connie retired in 1990s Southfield-Detroit, Michigan area. Stephenson was a member of Academy of Certified Social Workers and National Association of Social Workers. In 2016, Connie moved to Holland where she resided until her passing.


Connie enjoyed her cats and dogs; most recent were Max and Peanut. Throughout the years, Connie became well versed in antiques, enjoyed collecting and selling art, ceramics, coins, toys, furniture.

She is survived by her son, Scott S. Meach, sisters Barbara J. Stephenson, of Hudsonville, niece, Rebekah H. Bouwkamp of Holland; sister Mary L. Stephenson of Ketchikan, Alaska and brother, David D. Stephenson of Kyle, Texas.


Family wishes to thank administrators and staff at Resthaven Care Center Rachel House Dementia unit for caring for our sister Connie and to Paul TerBeek, her legal guardian. Our frontline warriors in the health care system.


On Friday, April 4, a Celebration of Life in honor of Connie will be held at Ofield Funeral Home 4500 Kalamazoo at 44th Street Kentwood, Michigan from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.


On Saturday, April 5, a graveside memorial will be held at Poe Cemetery (Patterson at Born Road) Jones, Michigan at 11:00 AM. First Baptist Church of Newburg Jones offering potluck hospitality and fellowship afterward.


In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Alzheimer's Association or Connie's favorite cause, Humane Society, the 'caregivers' for all animals big and small.


Hills were climbed, strengthened by struggles, drying tears through love, friendship made and lost.
