Obituary

October 27, 2012 Service: November 17, 2012 Clason "Clay" Shumard, age 71, passed away Saturday, October 27th after a 7 year battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Nancy, in 2011. Clay is survived by his daughters Deidra (Joseph) Drumm, Kathy (Pete) Michela-Jacob, Tiffany Shumard; stepson Jeffrey (Amy) Mantia; grandchildren Blake, Jacob and Dalton Drumm, Caleb and Kyla Keyes, and Steven and William Mantia; sister Debby (Michael) Hudspeth. Clay's singing career began in his high school's competition choir and continued at the University of Detroit. He later served as vocalist for the Peter Palmer Band. After discovering barbershop singing, he was a member of several quartets in Michigan and Tennessee, most notably the Vagabonds (2nd place at International Competition in 1976). He also directed the Great Lakes Chorus in Grand Rapids in the 1970's and 1980's. His "day jobs" included Michigan Peer Review Organization and most recently Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 17th at 11:00am at the Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood. Visitation with his family will be from 10-11am, immediately preceding the service.
