Christine Starr Johnston

Christine Starr Johnston, a woman of deep conviction and boundless compassion, passed away, at age 68 on Friday, October 31st, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.

Chris was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose faith and strength touched every life she encountered. She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Richard Johnston; her children Johnny (Denise) Johnston, Tammy (Andy) Root, and Lisa Hansen; and her cherished grandchildren Holli, Bella, Brooklyn, Tyler, and Lexi.

She is also survived by her sisters Janet, Cindy, Connie, and Yvonne; step-siblings Denise, Gaylord (Marge), and Rex; sisters-in-law Vicki, Linda (Greg), Brenda (Bob), Tootie, Merri Jo (Tim), and Rhonda (Dan); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and special church friends who became like family. Chris also opened her heart and home to several foster children over the years. Among them, Omer held a particularly special place, someone she was deeply proud of and loved as her own.

Chris was a person who lived her beliefs with passion and purpose. When she believed in something, she gave her whole heart to it. Her compassion was fierce, her loyalty steadfast, and her faith unwavering. Those blessed to know her will remember her laughter, her strength, and her endless capacity to love and serve others.

Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love and faith will continue to guide all who knew her.

A Memorial Service and luncheon will be held on Saturday, November 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1934 Bridge St NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.
