Carol J Schurtz (Reed) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, (formerly of Mancelona and Muskegon, MI) age 67, passed away on June 24th, 2019. She was born to Elmer and Hazel (Curtis) Reed on January 5th, 1952, in Muskegon, MI. Carol loved to spend her free time reading and enjoying the wildlife of northern Michigan. In particular, she enjoyed the many species of birdlife. Carol retired from the City of Grand Rapids where she spent over three decades working in the Planning Division. Carol spent several years on the Historic Preservation Committee and was active in the Grand Rapids Employee's Independent Union as Union Steward and a Member at Large. Carol is survived by her step-mother Harriet Reed, sons Jody (Heather) Moore, Jason (Angie) Moore, Mark Schurtz, Steve Schurtz and Jeff Schurtz, brother Mike (Anne) Reed, half-sister Kim (Dale) Platz, several nieces and nephews and many grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Dennis, parents Elmer Reed, Harriett Jensen and Sister Diane Wallick. The family would like to thank Spectrum Health Hospice for their care and compassion during Carol's illness. A memorial honoring Carol will be held on Friday, June 28 at 11 am at Lakeside Community Church, 6201 Whitneyville Ave, Alto MI 49302. Visitation begins one-hour prior at 10am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Carol J Schurtz to Gilda's Club, Grand Rapids.
