IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Calvin Thomas
Dickerson
September 3, 1939 – February 21, 2022
Square 'em up, all you Angels, your favorite caller is coming.
Calvin "Bud" Dickerson of Hastings, formerly of Williamston, passed away quietly at home surrounded by family on February 21st, after a courageous 30+ year fight with heart disease. He was 82.
Bud was a very devoted family man, married to beloved wife Judy for 63 years, and a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He often said that the happiest times of his life were when the family was around him, either separately or all together. He was a humble, kind-hearted person, who really never asked for much but gave generously of himself, and his greatest wish was to see his family safe, healthy and happy.
Bud was an amazing, self-taught man of many talents. He enjoyed drawing, painting, and making beautiful stained glass creations, a craft he shared with his oldest son. He was an incredibly skilled carpenter who could remodel homes from roofing to plumbing, walls to flooring, and built many items of furniture, including rocking chairs and doll furniture for the grandkids, leaving behind countless beautiful works with his family and many close friends.
Bud enjoyed country music all his life, and was a gifted square dance caller. He spent 25 years calling for clubs all over mid-Michigan with Judy by his side. Along with regular dances, he called for many campouts and outdoor parties, including one for Governor Blanchard at the Governor's mansion. Bud had a sharp mind for the mechanics of calling and a beautiful singing voice - he could even yodel like Hank Williams. He was always genuinely grateful for the opportunity to make other people forget their troubles and have a good time.
Bud loved nature, and being outdoors. After he retired from MSU, he and Judy bought a cottage on a lake where he always had one or two boats, and everyone who visited could be assured of a relaxing tour of the lake and its beautiful sunsets. He loved to fish and take care of the garden, and the lawn in all seasons. In the winter he could be seen on his lawn tractor, plowing or blowing snow for his neighbors. When his health was declining, he was very appreciative of the help his good neighbors in Hastings gave to him.
Bud loved this country, and in the 1990's he and Judy had some adventures traveling the four corners of the USA in their classic GMC. He was also a good storyteller, and enjoyed sharing personal experiences and history with his family.
Bud was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star, serving his Lodge as Worshipful Master and his Chapter three times as Worthy Patron. He had a strong, quiet faith in God, and would often say there was no point worrying about things you couldn't control - just try to "enjoy the experience".
Bud was predeceased by his parents and four sisters. He is survived by his wife Judy, children Kevin Dickerson, Lori Caruso (Dan) and Andrew Dickerson, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister, Bernetta Adams, cousins, nieces and nephews. Bud set a lasting example of a selfless life well-lived, taking good care of his family, giving to others, and enjoying the moment.
