Betty Jean (Houwerzyl) Karel was born to Jacob and Johanna (Maat) Houwerzyl on January 13, 1926 in Grand Rapids, MI and passed away on August 2, 2021.

She is survived by her children Steve Karel and Doug (Diana) Karel, her grandchildren, Brad (Dorothy) VandeKieft, Paula (Bob) Louagie and Isabela Karel plus 5 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Margie Wierenga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Karel, and their children, Nancy and William VandeKieft, Tom Karel, and Carol Karel.

The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers of Valley View Care Center and Faith Hospice for their compassion and care of Betty.

The family will celebrate Betty's life with visitation on Friday August 6 at 10:00 am at Ofield Funeral Home followed by funeral services at 11:30am. Internment at Pine Hill Cemetery, Kentwood MI. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Faith Hospice.
