Bette Jane
Fuller
June 8, 1927 – January 26, 2024
Bette Jane (De Good) Fuller, age 96 of Cook Valley Estates and formerly of East Grand Rapids, died on January 26, 2024. Bette was born in Grand Rapids on June 8, 1927 as the youngest of five children raised by second-generation Dutch immigrants,John and Lena (Verburg) De Good. She was married to Charles (Chuck) Fuller for 68 years prior to his death in 2017. Bette is survived by her three sons: Robert (Kathy), Thomas (Mary), and John (Melissa); six grandchildren: Rachel Washburn (Todd), Andrew Pschirrer; Bryan Fuller (Natalie); Matt Fuller (Hayley); Kyle Fuller (Ryan Falbisaner), and Jack Fuller; eight great grandchildren: Emma, Will, Sam, Evelyn, Louis Washburn;Alexandra, Lucas, Fielding Fuller. She was preceded in death by her daughter Martha, her sister Leona, and her brothers Don, Paul, and Norman.
Bette graduated from South High School in 1945 and from Aquinas College in 1976. She worked part time in her husband's real estate appraisal business for forty years. Her main source of professional pride was teaching English as a second language (ESL) which provided her the opportunity to serve as a good will ambassador to future citizens arriving from across the globe. Bette and Chuck traveled extensively throughout Europe, the middle East, north Africa, South & Central America, and across both the United States and Canada. Her favorite spots in the world, however, were Traverse Bay, Marco Island, and the Grand Haven beachfront.
Bette enjoyed time in her gardens on Santa Cruz (where she resided for 51 years) and Cook Valley (where she resided for 18 years), where she often quoted the phrase, her dad, John, taught her "one is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth". She had many special memories of fishing with her dad on Lake Macatawa as a little girl, where he jokingly told her she talked too much, and going to the Cherry Inn with him in Grand Rapids. Her favorite hymn to sing in church with her mom and dad, was 'Nearer my God to Thee.' As her husband Chuck often said, Bette always had her nose in a book. Bette was also a bit of a social butterfly, always lit up a room, and left behind many dear friends, including but not limited to: her tennis group, the Santa Cruz Moms, several book and bridge clubs, and countless others.
Bette was a former member and president of the Waters Guild of Blodgett Hospital. She was also a long-time member of the Women's City Club where her favorite activity was the Book Club.
Bette made generous contributions to the Grand Rapids Foundation and Planned Parenthood. Memorial donations can be made to Planned Parenthood of Michigan, and Faith Hospice, both organizations near and dear to her heart.
Per her request, a private family burial service will take place at a later date.
