Arthur James "Art" Sorensen (1928-2020) SORENSEN,

Art Sorensen passed away peacefully in his sleep, during a stay at a skilled care facility in Michigan, on December 18, 2020. He was 92 years old. He was a beloved father to Kesh Sorensen. son-in-law Randy Ferino, and the late Hugo F. Sorensen. He was the beloved older brother to the late John B."Jack" Sorensen,of Windsor, CA., beloved uncle to Kirsten (Sorensen) Toussaint of Mill Valley, CA. and the late John B. Sorensen, great-uncle to Kyle S., Ryan S., Candace S., Erik T, and Lily T.

Art was born to Arthur and Elva Sorensen, in Evanston, IL, in 1928 and grew up in Villa Park, IL. He then settled into the Lake Neighborhood of Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago,1946-1953, where he earned a B.A. in 1948 and an M.A., in Anthropology, in 1952. By his own description, a "Poet-Painter, Politico, Progressive, Rehabilitated Anthropologist". He was a prolific oil painter, poet and author. He was an honored professional in the Vocational Rehabilitation field; a Rehabilitation Coordinator for the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium, Chicago, IL,, from 1962-1974, till it closed permanently in 1974, due to medical advances which rendered it obsolete.

He then traveled extensively to Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa, pursuing his social anthropological interests, enriching his life and the lives of those he interacted with. Upon his return, he continued in the field, working with the Department of Aging, running sheltered workshops, job training in Iowa (1977-1981) and Chicago, and in later years, having a career with Goodwill Industries of the Greater Metropolitan area of Chicago and Wisconsin, as a Vocational Evaluator, until his retirement in 2013. His paintings and poetry were exhibited over the years, throughout his lifetime, which included several one man shows during his retirement.
