Obituary

Annie Galle Collins, a beacon of creativity and spirit, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024, in Holland, Michigan. Born on May 26, 1942, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Annie brought light and joy into the lives of all who knew her. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her journey through life was as graceful as the dance moves she so elegantly performed and taught to others.

Her earliest years were spent as a student of the Royal Danish Ballet which ignited a passion for dance that lasted a lifetime. At the tender age of 13, she left her home to join the Stockholm Ballet, launching a career that would see her grace the stages of numerous dance and opera companies in Denmark and across Europe. She later moved to the United States, where she continued to spread her love for the arts. In Poughkeepsie, New York, Annie, alongside her late husband, Edward Collins, founded and operated the Galle & Collins Dance Academy for 38 years. The academy became a cornerstone of the community, nurturing the talents of countless aspiring dancers.

Annie's legacy also includes the formation of the Annie Galle Dance Company, showcasing her students' talents across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The company's tours to Scandinavia and Ireland were a testament to Annie's dedication to cultural exchange and her pride in her Danish heritage. Her community involvement extended even further as she choreographed and performed in numerous musicals, leaving an indelible mark on the high schools and local theatres of Dutchess County.

Her love of classical music filled her home, and her Danish roots were evident in her love of all things from her homeland. The toast "Skol for Denmark!" was a staple at every holiday meal, echoing her pride and joy in her cultural heritage.

She was also an accomplished visual and textile artist who found solace and expression in oil painting and watercolors. Her hands were rarely still, as she was often found sewing, quilting, knitting, or crocheting.

Annie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward Vincent Collins, her mother, Henny Elizabeth Galle, and her father, Knud Galle. She leaves behind her sister, Birte Galle, and a legacy through her children, Dennis Collins, Amanda Impens (husband Scott), and Kate Collins (husband Jack). Her grandchildren, Max, Emily, Simon, Lincoln, and Ethan, will carry forward her creative spirit and love for life.

Described by those who knew her as creative, friendly, and spirited, Annie's life was a reflection of the quote by Hans Christian Andersen, "Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower."

Annie Galle Collins will be remembered for her unwavering passion for the arts, her dedication to her students, and the love she had for her family and friends. Her memory will dance on in the hearts of those she touched, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations to pursue their passions with grace and determination.

In Annie's final years, she crocheted hundreds of hats for children and cancer patients.
