September 9, 1947 – October 24, 2018
Ann (Whalen) Kurek, 9/9/47 - 10/24/18 of Hudsonville, Michigan passed away following complications from recent heart surgery. Ann is lovingly remembered by her husband of 44 years, Tom; son, Jack Lapp and family and friends. Ann was a teacher for 32 years at Lee High School followed by 17 years at Breton Village Travel where she was a marketing coordinator and receptionist. Visitation will be Sunday, October 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 and from 5:00 to 8:00 at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE Kentwood, MI 49508. There will also be visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon prior to the funeral mass which will take place on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2700 Baldwin Street, Jenison, MI 49428. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in honor of Ann Kurek to a charity that touches your heart. Ann was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School ('65), and Michigan State University (BA with Teaching Certificate ('69), MA - Education ('81). Ann was preceded in death by her parents, James and Jeanne Whalen, and her sister, Pat Geerling (Whalen). In addition to her husband, Tom, and son, Jack, Ann is survived by her brother, Mike (Sandy) Whalen and her brother-in-law, Tom Geerling. Ann has twelve surviving brothers and sisters-in-law on the Kurek side of the family: Barbara Ek, Beverly Hilaski, Margaret Kurek, David Kurek, Joan Dill, Susan Booms, Timothy Kurek, Jake Kurek, Johnathon Kurek, Marybeth Kurek, Mark Kurek, and Matthew Kurek. From the day he was born, Ann was a backup mother to her nephew Peter Geerling (Jessica) and their children Leo and Rocco. She was also close to her nephew Chris Whalen (Erin), their children Mallory, Makayla, and Peyton; and her niece Meredith Jenkins (Khalid), and their children Milo and Lucy. Ann was intellectually curious, well read, and very widely traveled. She loved theatre, art, architecture, movies, trivia, and friends. Ann was quick to volunteer and equally quick to recruit volunteers to her various undertakings. Ann has left us all with a lifetime of memories, but if she had one final message, it would be "Please Vote."
