Andrew Hunt Porter, 61, of Lowell, Michigan, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife Julie Raleigh Porter, mother Mary Porter, sisters Emily (Lynn) Pringle, Gay (Mike) DeNileon and Fran (Tom) Milner. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Jane Raleigh, in-laws Tonya (Mike) Smith, Dan (Sue) Raleigh and Pam Rancour, along with additional "family," Steve Oudendyk, Lisa Lalley and his beloved Labrador Retriever Sally.
He was the favorite uncle to Hilary (Sandy) Flint, Sam Pringle, Sarah Pringle, Ellie Milner, Porter Milner, Hayley (Christian) Ragsdale, Lindsey (Ben Janzen) Smith, Zac Smith, Bryan (Laine Bayle) Raleigh, Jake Raleigh, Scott (Jill) Rancour, Jason (Jackie) Rancour and ten great nieces and nephews. Andy is preceded in death by his father William H. Porter and his father-in-law William Bryan Raleigh.
Andy was born in Holland, Michigan. He graduated from West Ottawa High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. Andy was an early adopter of CAD technology to design automotive parts, before joining PorterCorp, his father's company, to design and manufacture park shelters, gazebos and structural insulated panels. Later, Andy started his own business building and customizing off-road teardrop campers.
Andy was a licensed builder, skilled craftsman, avid boater, camper, and generous host. His cottage on Murray Lake, known as "Camp Andy", was the site of many happy gatherings of family and friends. With his creativity and many skills, he designed and built the home he and Julie shared in Lowell and did many upgrades to the cottage.
