Obituary

Albert Le Roy "Al" Van Essen passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, at the age of 89 after a courageous battle with dementia. He was surrounded by the love of his family in his final moments.

Born on April 12, 1937, Al lived a life defined by hard work, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He retired from Steelcase after many years as a skilled welder, taking great pride in his work and in providing for his family. Al was also a proud veteran of the Navy.

Family was the heart of Al's life. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and loved ones. One of his greatest joys was sitting in the stands, cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events.

Al was a true handyman who could fix just about anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His generosity, dependability, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

An avid outdoorsman, Al looked forward to his annual hunting trips to South Dakota, where he created lifelong memories with family and friends. At home, he enjoyed unwinding with a classic Western, rarely missing the chance to watch his favorite cowboys on television. He valued life's simple pleasures and the friendships he built over the years.

Known affectionately as "Al, Everyone's Pal," he never met a stranger. His warm smile, compassionate heart, and genuine interest in others made everyone feel welcome and earned him countless lifelong friendships.

Al was preceded in death by his first wife, Yvonne Van Essen; his sister, Deb Grandon; his parents; and many cherished family members and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Marie Van Essen; his brother, Gary Van Essen (Wanda); his children, Rod Van Essen (Cindie) and Kim Bolitho (Tim Miller); his grandchildren, Renee Lahiff (Jason), Ronda Varnesdeel (Bernard Jr.), Robin Bolitho (Beau Kennedy), Sean Van Essen, and Bryan Van Essen; along with several beloved great-grandchildren. He shared a special bond with Bernie and Ava who brought joy to his heart.

A Celebration of Life honoring Al will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 2350 44th St. SW, Wyoming, MI 49519, on Friday, July 31, 2026. The family will host a visitation from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., with the Celebration of Life service immediately following. Refreshments and fellowship will be provided after the service.
