Raymond Mieras Obituary

Raymond Joseph Mieras, 90, peacefully passed away on Monday, August 8, 2016 in the care of Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods. He is preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Martha (Keenan) Mieras, his son Raymond Gregory, and wife, Wava (Justus). He was the longest living survivor of seven children, including one brother, Adrian Mieras and 5 sisters; Helen Farkas, Martha Terpstra, Irene Buroccki, Genevieve Mankoski, and Marie Wilson. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Reeder and her husband, Robert and his long time companion, Patricia Hansen. Ray was born in Grand Rapids, MI in 1926 and served in the US Navy in WWII and then reenlisted again during the Korean War. He spent much of his career in the electrical industry, moving his family to Atlanta, GA and then to Houston, TX before returning home to Grand Rapids in 1965. He retired from Kendall Electric in 1991 and spent the remainder of his years traveling and enjoying family and friends in the company of his companion, Pat. During his retirement years he volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Spectrum Health- Butterworth and Visiting Nurses. Ray faced many challenges during his lifetime, including the loss of his son in 1968 and his wife in 1992. In 2008, at age 82, he contracted MRSA and eventually lost his leg to the infection. He persevered and remained in an independent living environment for the next 8 years. He remains to this day an inspiration to all who knew him. A man of few words, he was slow to get- to- know and impossible to dislike. We'll miss his keen sense of humor and the wisdom that comes from a life well lived. Special thanks go to Mary Free Bed for the therapy and support needed for his independent living throughout the past few years and to Faith Hospice for providing care and comfort during the last weeks. A funeral Mass will take place at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 17th at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 423 First St. NW, Grand Rapids, MI. Fr. Dick Host, Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ray's memory may be made to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital.
