Patricia Ann (McBride) Hill, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at Vista Springs Wyoming Assisted Living with her family at her side. Born in Fremont, Michigan, Pat was the youngest child of Thomas and Grace McBride. During World War II, Pat lived and worked in Detroit. While traveling by train from Grand Rapids to Detroit in 1942, Pat had a chance encounter with a brash and handsome young soldier. That encounter led to three years of correspondence while he fought in the Pacific theatre. Upon his return in 1945, Pat and that soldier, Jack Carl Hill, were married and remained so until his death in November 2008. They were a perfect match; Pat's calm demeanor and subtle sense of humor counterbalanced Jack's large personality and love of the limelight. Pat and Jack settled in Grand Rapids and raised three children. She loved being a homemaker and enjoyed entertaining. Pat also enjoyed traveling and she and Jack made trips to Europe, Hawaii, Bermuda and the Caribbean. She was an avid boater, camper and reader and was never happier than when she was sitting around a bonfire with her family and friends. A skilled card player, Pat was expert at games of all kinds, particularly bridge and poker. She also had an extensive repertoire of jokes and limericks and took great delight in sharing them. A proud member of the Greatest Generation, Pat was a wonderful sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend and she touched many people during her long and full life. In addition to her siblings and her husband, Pat was preceded in death by a son, Steven L. Hill, and a grandson, Patrick Ryan Gill. She is survived by daughters, Sherri Hill and Kimberly (Patrick) Gill, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and many nieces, nephews and friends, especially those at Bayberry Farms Village, her home for the past several years. A celebration of Pat's life will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Avenue, S.E., Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grateful to the skilled and compassionate caregivers at Hospice of Michigan and Vista Springs Wyoming Assisted Living, the family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan.
